In November 2017, we delved into the Lao labor framework, its relevant legislation, and guidance from the labor authorities on topics concerning the core aspects of employment relationships in the Lao PDR. One of the key topics featured was employee retirement. As a continuation of our “A Closer Look” series, we discussed retirement and its various legal aspects in more expansive detail at this seminar.
Our speakers analyzed and expanded upon Lao Labor Law provisions concerning retirement, age limitations, and payouts. Important topics covered:
- Employer obligations when an employee retires;
- Whether employers can legally implement a compulsory retirement age;
- Calculation of the retirement benefit set out in the law; and
- Whether the employer or the social security organization is responsible for retirement payments.
Our Head of Regional Employment Practice Group, Danyel Thomson, discussed these topics. The discussions were followed by a Q&A session where all attendees will have the opportunity to raise any queries and concerns on retirement issues, and have them suitably addressed. This seminar was of particular interest to all types of employers, whether they be private enterprises, embassies, international organizations, or INGOs operating in the Lao PDR. For all of those concerned, this was an opportunity not be missed.
